Whitewash: The Coverup
Whitewash: The Coverup, a visual response to issues of race and social justice in our culture. It focuses on our country’s historical contradiction of promoting liberty, freedom and democracy on the one hand and maintaining a system of enslavement and exploitation of people who are non-white on the other. I use visual imagery to explore the social construction of whiteness; and layer historical and cultural references from enslavement through the present that show racial disparities in our institutional systems. These images illustrate what has been whitewashed, ignored, and suppressed in order to keep systemic oppression in place.
